Mental health crises can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to face them alone. The Lighthouse, run by Carlisle Eden Mind, provides in-person, one-to-one crisis support for anyone struggling with their mental health in Carlisle and Eden.
What is Crisis Support?
A mental health crisis is serious, and reaching out for help is never a waste of time. Whether you’re feeling distressed, anxious, depressed, or unable to cope, we are here to support you. Mental health crises look different for everyone. You might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, hopeless, or struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide. For others, a crisis could mean feeling emotionally numb, unable to cope, or just needing a safe place to be. Whatever you’re going through, your feelings are valid, and you deserve support.
How to Access The Lighthouse
To ensure everyone gets the support they need, The Lighthouse operates on an appointment-only basis. You can book a same-day appointment during our opening hours via Mindline Cumbria:

Getting some support when you need it most can make a huge difference in managing a mental health crisis. A listening ear, a conversation where you will be heard, or a simple gesture of care can help ground you during turbulent times, reminding you that you’re not alone. These acts of support can provide the strength and hope needed to take the first steps toward recovery, gradually building resilience and opening the door to further help.
At Carlisle Eden Mind’s Lighthouse, we believe that no one should have to face a mental health crisis alone. Our dedicated team is here to offer compassionate, understanding, and practical support to help you through difficult times.

What if it's an emergency?
There may be times when your friend or a family member needs to seek help more urgently, such as if they:
- have harmed themselves and need medical attention
- are having suicidal feelings, and feel they may act on them
- are putting themselves or someone else at immediate, serious risk of harm.
In this case:
If they are not safe by themselves right now – as long as you feel able to do so, you should stay with them and help them call 999 for an ambulance, or help them get to A&E. They may appreciate it if you can wait with them until they can see a doctor.
If they can keep themselves safe for a little while – you can get quick medical advice by calling NHS Direct on 111 (England) or 0845 46 47 (Wales), or you could help them make an emergency GP appointment to see a doctor soon. You can encourage them to call the Samaritans on 116 123 at any time of night or day to talk to someone. It may also be helpful to remove things that they could use to harm themselves, particularly if they have mentioned specific things they might use.
If you feel personally in danger right now, or that others are in immediate danger – you can dial 999 and ask for the police to help. You might feel worried about getting someone in trouble, but it’s important to put your own safety first.
